The 45 Most Inspiring Quotes on Change

Great books, blogs and quotes are three of my sources of inspiration when I feel stuck or need encouragement to do something I’m scared of.

Here are 45 of my favourite quotes on life change, finding courage and having faith that things will work out – like when left my job to pursue my interests, sold everything I owned to travel, and continuing to travel past the one year anniversary of being away from work.

You can benefit from the wisdom behind the quotes daily, by posting them on:
– Your refrigerator and bathroom mirror, so you see it every morning
– Your living room table, or front of your journal so you see them before you sleep
– Keep them in your wallet to have with you during the day.

      Hi Ed,

Thanks for your kind words :) I love that quote too, it’s so easy to find yourself siding with what is normal instead of thinking about what’s most right for you.

Hey Lily!!!  #22/#32 from Steve Jobs has always been ones I remember when any doubts creep in about why I’m pursuing my sabbatical.  Life is short and we don’t have time to waste wondering about the what-if’s or to continue to do things that make us unhappy.  Very inspiring post.

    • http://exploreforayear.com Lily

      Hi Matt,

You must be so excited about your sabbatical! I was on your blog today and you have less than a month to go! Looking forward to your updates :)

I found Steve Job’s convocation speech inspiring and my favourite quote from his speech is actually the one about having faith. I cried the first time I heard it:
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward,You can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.Believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path, and that will make all the difference.”

Mine is from the fairytale storyteller Walt Disney. I need it very much. Thanks for sharing these quotes. Also that simple quote from Winston Churchill about not giving up.

great quotes lily.. my fave one is ‘“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.” –Life’s Little Instruction Boo’ … shared it in FB :-)

“The only way to manage change is to create it” – Peter Drucker

“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference…”

“‘Realistic’ is the adjective of cynics”

I also like the George Bernard Shaw quote (the unreasonable man), I use it on my website! And the Mary Anne Radmacher (courage doesn’t always roar…) one.

I have a book full of quotes I have written out…they are the best for offering wisdom in a concise and snappy way…

    • http://exploreforayear.com Lily

      Hi Adam,

Thanks for sharing these quotes, I love the second one about having “wisdom to know the difference” between is in vs out of your control. I also like your idea of having a book for keeping quotes, I may copy you and do the same because I was keeping my quotes as notes/photos on my iPhone and an Excel spreadsheet (which of course got corrupted and I lost my quotes).

Thanks for the quotes and tip Adam!

This is great.. I’m going to have to stumbleupon this! I just read Chris Guillebeau’s book on the art of non-conformity. It also had some great quotes about change and acting upon it.

      Hi Gerard,

Thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed the quotes. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Chris Guillebeau’s book and have been meaning to find it, so thanks for reminding me about it!

Great post! My favorite: #37 – “As soon as anyone starts telling you to be “realistic,” cross that person off your invitation list.” –John Eliot

    • http://exploreforayear.com Lily

      Hi Stefanie,

Glad you enjoyed the post. I love that quote too, especially because it still applies if you replace “realistic” with other words like “responsible”, “normal” and other status quo type of adjectives.

      Thanks for stopping by Stefanie!

    • http://exploreforayear.com Lily

      Hi Ayngelina,

I like that one a lot too – it’s a good reminder that mistakes shouldn’t be feared because they add to progress. See you in Innsbruck in about 4 days! :)

  • Paul

Number 19 to check if people are reading all of them ;).

Keep enjoying your travels! People like me – who seem to only enjoy travels in shorts burst before I can no longer handle it – enjoy reading your tweets and blog entries as someone who can :).

Plus, gives me some ideas for future vacations. I may love my job, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy other experiences :).

    • http://exploreforayear.com Lily

      Hi Paul,

#19 is from me! ;) It first appeared on my blog post “Highs and Lows of An Unforgettable Year”. Thanks for noticing that one :)

I love travelling in short bursts too. You have less to pack, can sustain a more exciting pace, less to plan. In Europe I’ve actually started taking ‘shorter’ sub-trips by basing myself out of a well-connected city. For example, using Berlin as a home base, I’ve gone to Copenhagen, Hamburg, Munich etc with just a small backpack instead of the load and it’s nice to know you have a familiar city to come back to.

Thanks for stopping by Paul, great to hear from you :D

thank you for this. i am 1 day away from giving my notice at work prior to 5 months of travel, and i’ve been feeling a little anxious. these quotes help keep me focused.

    • http://exploreforayear.com Lily

      Hi Itchy Feet,

Best of luck tomorrow! I remember how fast my heart beat every time I thought about having “the conversation” with my boss about leaving my job. I was so nervous, I even put it off 1-2 weeks, luckily the day I had set was relatively far in the future so that the team still got over 6 weeks of notice :)

Just think of the relief you’ll have after it’s all out in the open. Good luck!

Imagination is a vantage point of the future from which we can consider that which is lacking in the present. – John Dewey

It matters not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving – Oliver Wendell Holmes

The true voyage of discovery is not a journey to new places; it is learning to see with new eyes – Proust

I never wear a watch, because I always know it’s now — and now is when you should do it. – Steve Mariucci

Comparison, a great teacher once told me, is the cardinal sin of modern life. It traps us in a game that we can’t win. Once we define ourselves in terms of others, we lose the freedom to shape our own lives. – Jim Collins

Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until they are 75. – Benjamin Franklin

      Hi JB,

Thanks for these quotes, they’re great! I love the quote “Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until they are 75.” It gives me a chuckle, but it’s so true. Cheers to dying on the same day we’re buried ;)
