7 Habits of Highly Effective PeopleI’m reviewing my favourite personal growth and productivity books, and giving them away to make room for new ones.

Last week’s winner of The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss was Jessica Tang. Congrats Jessica!

This week’s give-away is the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. It was first published in 1990, is a business bestseller and considered a “classic” personal development book.

Book Overview

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is considered to be a “classic” personal development book, and was first recommended to me by a manager during one of my university co-op terms.

I didn’t finish reading the book back then, but picked up again in the last year. The book is straight forward, well-structured, although some sections seemed textbook-like, which may be due to being written in 1990.

It doesn’t have the pace or humour of a ‘pop-culture’ productivity book like The 4-Hour Workweek, but still worth the read because the framework and concepts are timeless.

The book has 3 main themes: 1.) Self-mastery, 2.) Interaction with others, and 3.) Self-renewal by combining all the habits together.

The 7 Habits

Private Victory
1. Be proactive – exercising discipline and control over your actions and reactions
2. Begin with the end in mind – concentrate of your personal vision and avoid distractions
3. Put first things first – prioritize time and energy to achieve your goals

Public Victory
4. Think Win-Win – shift your thinking to abundance and collaboration rather than win/lose
5. Seek first to understand then be understood
6. Synergize – Seeing strengths in others to build something that is greater than the sum of it’s parts

Constant Renewal
7. Sharpen the saw – applying the previous habits and constantly improving oneself in all areas, spiritual, mental, physical and social.

Final Thoughts

I’d highly recommend this book for:

  • Anyone interested in reading one of the ‘classic’ personal development books
  • Anyone looking for structured steps on self-improvement and developing effective relationships with others
